SimRated Announces Partnership with HOSA

Author: Kristin Oropeza

SimRated has partnered with the global student-led HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) organization and looks forward to helping sponsor HOSA’s Clinical Speciality Competitive event. The partnership comes at a time when the healthcare industry continues to feel the effects of a shortage of qualified healthcare workers that has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

HOSA, accredited by the U.S. Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services, aims to inspire and empower the next generation of healthcare professionals. The organization encourages students to take on leadership roles within the global health community, using education, collaboration, and hands-on experience. With a focus on promoting career opportunities within the healthcare industry and improving the delivery of quality healthcare to all individuals, HOSA strives to foster a strong partnership between health science educators and students, urging them to affiliate with and participate actively in the HSE-HOSA Partnership.

For over four decades, HOSA has been offering a program that supports students with a passion for healthcare careers by providing opportunities for leadership development, motivation, and recognition. The program is available to secondary, postsecondary, middle school, adult, and collegiate students who are enrolled in health science education or biomedical science programs, or who are interested in pursuing careers in health professions. HOSA aims to help students develop a strong foundation of technical content and soft skills through approved health industry curriculum and competitive skills events.

SimRated, an Elite Partner, looks forward to helping sponsor the upcoming Clinical Speciality Competition. HOSA's career event provides an excellent opportunity for members to gain knowledge and skills related to their chosen health careers. The competitive event comprises three components: the development of a career portfolio, a video demonstration of a selected skill commonly used in the chosen health career, and a live presentation to the judges. The primary goal of this event is to encourage members to delve deeper into a health-related career and develop the necessary skills to become successful health professionals in the future.

As the Elite Partner and sponsor of the Clinical Specialty event, HOSA will add to the Clinical Specialty guidelines the suggested skills to be performed that are SimRated skills. These skills are limited to the following and cannot be skills found in other competitive events:

• Anaphylaxis Epinephrine Auto-injection

• Bandaging and wound care

• Creating a sterile field

• ECG Lead Placement

• Intubation

• IV Placement

• Knee injury assessment

• Nasal Narcan for Opioid Overdose

• Phlebotomy

• Suturing

Competitive skills events in the healthcare industry are essential for students because they can provide many benefits such as enhancing technical skills, improving problem-solving abilities, and fostering teamwork and communication skills (Watson, Manning, & Gross, 2018). These events also provide an opportunity for students to gain experience working in a competitive environment and prepare for real-world scenarios (Alhadid, 2017). By participating in these events, students can also develop leadership skills and improve their ability to work under pressure (Duggan & Banerjee, 2017). According to the National Consortium for Health Science Education (2019), such events help students develop critical thinking skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with healthcare professionals. Additionally, participating in competitive skills events can help students network with peers and healthcare professionals, increasing opportunities for mentorship and professional growth (Mosley & Giardino, 2019).

In a statement from HOSA-Future Health Professionals, the organization stated “[We]  are honored to establish a partnership with SimRated to provide an all-in-one training solution that specializes in medical procedures that will strengthen the opportunities provided to HOSA members and advisors.”
